Interpreting Service

Free Interpreting Service for GP Patients in England

If you need help communicating during your GP appointment, a free interpreting service is available to you.

This service is for:

  • People who do not speak English well

  • People who are deaf

  • People who are deaf/blind

Children are not allowed to interpret for you during appointments or treatment.

Your GP practice will arrange the interpreter for you.

We will also add a Reasonable Adjustment flag to your patient record. This helps staff know that you need communication support for future appointments.

When to tell us you need an interpreter

Please let us know as soon as possible that you need an interpreter.

  • If you are booking a GP appointment, tell us at the time of booking.

  • If this is the first time, a friend or relative who speaks English can contact us for you.

Important information

To help us provide the best service for everyone, please:

  • Tell us if you cannot attend your appointment or treatment.

  • Tell us if you will be late.

  • Let us know if you had any problems communicating during your appointment.

  • Tell us if communication went well.

This helps us improve the service and make sure interpreters are available for all patients who need them.
