Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people communicate, interact and experience the world. It is a spectrum, meaning every autistic person is different and may have different strengths, challenges and support needs.
Around 700,000 people in the UK are autistic, and many face barriers in everyday life, including healthcare, education and employment.
Autistic people may experience:
• Differences in communication and social interaction.
• Sensory sensitivities (such as to noise, light or touch).
• A preference for routines and predictability.
However, many autistic people also have strengths such as strong attention to detail, creativity and deep focus.
This week is about moving beyond awareness to acceptance, understanding and inclusion. Small changes, like patience, clear communication and supportive environment, can make a big difference.
