Bowel Cancer Screening Awareness

Early Detection Saves Lives

Why It Matters

Bowel cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) is one of the most common types of cancer—but it’s also one of the most treatable when caught early. Screening helps detect signs of cancer before you have symptoms, and in many cases, can even prevent cancer from developing.

🧪 What Is Bowel Screening?

The bowel screening test checks for tiny amounts of blood in your stool (poo), which can be an early sign of bowel cancer. This is known as the FIT test (Faecal Immunochemical Test). It’s:

  • Free

  • Done at home

  • Quick and simple

  • Sent to you by post if you’re eligible

If blood is found, you’ll be invited for further tests, usually a colonoscopy, to find out more.

👤 Who Should Take the Test?

  • Adults aged 60 to 74 (in England)

    • Some areas are expanding this to ages 50–59

  • The test is sent every 2 years

  • If you’re over 75, you can request a test kit by calling the screening helpline on 0800 707 6060.

⚠️ If you have a family history of bowel cancer or symptoms such as persistent changes in your bowel habits, bleeding, or unexplained weight loss—don’t wait for screening. Contact your GP.

📬 How It Works

  1. Receive the test kit in the post

  2. Use the stick provided to collect a small sample of poo

  3. Place the sample in the labelled tube and return it using the pre-paid envelope

  4. Results are usually sent within 2 weeks

🌟 Why Take Part?

  • Bowel cancer often develops without symptoms

  • Early-stage bowel cancer has a more than 90% survival rate

  • Screening can detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous

🙋‍♀️ Not Sure About the Test?

It’s normal to feel unsure or embarrassed—but remember, this test is:

  • Private

  • Clean and safe

  • Designed to save lives

If you have questions or need support using the kit, talk to your GP or nurse—we’re here to help.
